⭐ YEAR 10: TAFE YES PROGRAM ⭐ Last term, 13 of our Year 10 students participated in the TAFE YES (Youth Engagement Strategy) programs at either Nirimba or Kingswood TAFE campuses. The wide variety of courses available included Child Care, Fitness, Café Skills, and Plumbing. These short, hands-on programs provide students with valuable vocational skills and a genuine insight into what it's like to work in those industries. Upon completion, students receive a Certificate of Attainment, which can strengthen their resumes, support applications for part-time jobs, and open pathways to further study at TAFE NSW, including vocational courses, apprenticeships, and traineeships. Year 10 students at Penola have been involved in the TAFE YES initiative for the past two years, consistently reporting positive experiences and gaining confidence in both practical skills and future career possibilities.

⭐ YEAR 11 TAFE: THE INSPIRED SERIES ⭐ Earlier this month, five of our Year 11 Hospitality students joined over 100 peers from across the region at Kingswood TAFE for ‘The Inspired Series’, an event created and hosted by renowned restaurateur Luke Mangan. The two-hour session was both inspiring and insightful, offering students a rare opportunity to connect with authentic stories and firsthand experiences from industry leaders. The event featured an impressive panel of culinary professionals: - Luke Mangan - Celebrated restaurateur and host, who shared his personal journey and reflections on the hospitality industry. - Mark Best - Culinary advisor for the Netflix series ‘The Final Table’, bringing global perspective and expertise. - Amelia Birch - Sommelier and owner of Famelia, as well as founder of ‘Your Personal Sommelier’, offering a deep dive into the world of wine and fine dining. - Sam Young - Rising star chef and owner of S’More Restaurant, who shared his experiences as a young entrepreneur in the industry. Our students found the experience genuinely inspiring, with some expressing a renewed enthusiasm and deeper interest in pursuing pathways within the hospitality sector.

⭐ YEAR 11 BIOLOGY ⭐ Mrs Kaur’s Year 11 Biology class created an edible cell membrane model which they have been learning about in Module 1. To bring their learning to life, they built edible cell membrane models using cake, icing, and lollies! Not only did they deepen their understanding of membrane structure, but they also had a blast making, and eating, their delicious creations. A sweet way to learn science! ⭐ VISIT TO PARLIAMENT OF NSW & HYDE PARK BARRACKS ⭐ Our Year 10 Commerce students recently joined our Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students, Mrs Ftynogiannis, Mrs Vella, and Mr Seale, on a fun day in the city to visit the Parliament of NSW and the Hyde Park Barracks Museum. The group discussed upcoming development and issues of importance to local youth with our local member, Mrs Karen McKeown OAM MP, who was very impressed with the inquisitiveness of our future voters. The group also watched in astonishment the theatrics of Question Time in both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council Chambers to see how our legal system works in action. The group finished the day living our convict history with an audio guide walk-through of the UNESCO World Heritage Hyde Park Barracks. Mrs Ftynogiannis, Mrs Vella, and Mr Seale commented that it was terrific to see the students immerse themselves in such vital stories of Sydney's Indigenous and colonial history.

⭐ NAIDOC WEEK ⭐ NAIDOC Week is being celebrated across the country this week from 6-13 July 2025. At Penola Catholic College, we observed NAIDOC Week last week, coming together as a community to acknowledge and honour the rich culture, history, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples over the past 50 years. We began the week with a Smoking Ceremony at the front of the school on Monday morning - a powerful and respectful welcome to mark the beginning of our celebrations. Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to participate in a range of cultural activities including traditional weaving, rock painting and contributing to a collaborative NAIDOC Week art piece. These activities not only deepened students' understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture but also encouraged meaningful reflection on this year’s NAIDOC theme - The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy. We extend our sincere thanks to Mr Searle for his leadership and organisation of the week's events. Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese National NAIDOC
