Primary students learnt how taking on a trade could lead to a dream job when Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP) opened its Trade Training Centres during National Skills Week.
An interactive showcase was run by secondary students at McCarthy Catholic Trade Training Centre, Emu Plains and Loyola Catholic Trade Training Centre, Mount Druitt to educate Primary students to consider their career options.
CEDP Registered Training Organisation Manager Karen Ruppert said National Skills Week highlights the talent, skills, career pathways and value of apprentices and trainees across Australia.
We decided to focus on primary students because all students need to experience the world of work, particularly work of the future, long before they leave school. Exposure to the world of work provides opportunities for students to build connections with professionals outside their usual family networks.
“Young people’s pathways are formed early - with career aspirations often following traditional gender stereotypes, and tending to reflect student interest and achievement in traditional school subjects.
“Varied opportunities to engage with the world of work, through career talks, mentoring, and excursions to job sites can be valuable from primary school through to secondary school, particularly for students at risk of disengagement.”
Students were given the chance to participate in activities including carpentry, cooking, mechanics, hairdressing, electrical, landscaping and early childhood education.
Good Shepherd Primary School Year 6 teacher Tiffany Reid said she really liked the carpentry activity which saw students make pencil boxes and book stands.
“I think it was great for all the kids in terms of the different activities which were planned,’’ Mrs Reid said. “None of our students have ever been exposed to what Catholic Trade Training Centres have to offer and this showcase especially had the boys engaged.”
Year 6 teacher Christina Ellul said the role modeling by the secondary students was very good.
“It was refreshing to see them take charge and guide the students through the different activities planned. It was very well organised,’’ she said.

⭐HUMAN CONNECTIONS⭐ On Tuesday, our Year 9 and 10 students engaged in enriching workshops with Human Connections. Year 9 took part in the Accidental Counsellor for Teens workshop. This workshop is designed to equip students with essential skills to support both their friends and themselves during times of emotional need. Meanwhile, at the Year 10 workshop, the session was called 7 Steps to Motivate.This session was designed to cultivate a success-oriented mindset and attitude. Our Students were provided with practical strategies on motivation, resilience, overcoming procrastination and fostering a mindset conducive to success. Special mention goes to Cordell D from Year 10, who not only delivered the Ode of Remembrance but also showcased remarkable talent by playing the bugle for the Reveille and Rouse. His extraordinary effort truly made the ceremony memorable. ♟️PENOLA CHESS TOURNAMENT♟️ Our library recently hosted the Penola Chess Tournament, consisting of three rounds followed by a grand final. The intense Grand Final took place in the Mary Courtyard between Mr Drake and Daniel R from Year 9. After a gripping match, Daniel R emerged victorious as the champion of the 2024 Chess Tournament! With ANZAC Day recognised at the end of the school holidays this year, local schools are getting in early with their ceremonies, remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Monday's event at Penola Catholic College was coordinated by history teacher Nicholas Hall, whose personal connection to the day made it even more significant.

⭐YEAR 11 CAFS EXCURSION⭐ As part of the course work covered in Year 11 Community and Family Studies, an excursion to the city was organised to learn about independence, leadership, self confidence, decision making, group dynamics, and more. Students formed groups, navigated to Hyde Park, and explored iconic parts of the city like Darling Harbour, Mrs Macquarie's Chair and the Opera House. ⭐JARARA VISIT⭐ The Jarara Cultural Centre recently visited our college to conduct group sessions with our Aboriginal students, focusing on Traditional Indigenous Fibre Crafts. These crafts are deeply intertwined with ceremonial rituals and daily life, serving both spiritual and practical purposes. In collaboration with Parramatta Catholic Schools NSW, the CSPD Jarara Cultural Centre plays a vital role in fostering cultural exchange, building capacity, and providing pastoral care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families.
